“If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God. Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth.” Colossians 3:1-2
What do you “set your affection on”? Money? Material possessions? Are you pleasing God in who/what you focus on?
I have asked this question in the past: “If you could pinpoint one *worldly* thing in your life that you struggle with, what would it be?” Some women said Pride. Some said Food. Some said Money. We may have had different answers to this question, but one thing remains the same… we all struggle with worldliness.
Now, the things mentioned above aren’t necessarily wrong. Money isn’t wrong… it depends on why we want want it, how we use it, and what we did to get it. Pride isn’t necessarily wrong either… you can be proud of things (your children, your spouse, etc…) but once that pride turns into a haughty spirit or attitude, then it is wrong.
We cannot abstain from worldy things without God’s strength. We are born sinful, so naturally we want the things of the world. It is only when the Holy Spirit convicts us that we have a desire to please God and to stay away from worldliness. Now just because a person is saved, doesn’t mean that he/she won’t ever fall into the things of the world. We are born sinful and we can’t change that. But once the Holy Spirit convicts us and our focus is on God, we will have more of a desire to please God rather than the world.
Yes, it is hard to be a Christian. But we must remember we cannot do things with our own strength. When we try to do things on our own, we will fail. It is only with God and His strength that we can deny the things of the world and follow Him!
