“Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.” Proverbs 22:6
Being a mother is not an easy job. In fact, it’s probably the toughest job that we ever had to (or will) do. You are responsible for the upbringing of that child(ren). You are responsible to God for what you do as a mother. You are an agent of God, being used for His purpose — to train and instruct your children. And you are to remain faithful to Him by being faithful to them.
I am reading a wonderful book now called “Shepherding a Child’s Heart” by Dr. Ted Tripp. He refers to us as “agents of God”. We aren’t simply “caregivers” to our children. We aren’t simply there to make sure they have what they need. We are mothers for one reason alone — because God has chosen us to be mothers!!
It saddens me when I hear of women talking about how they had to give up working to be a mother. Now, I don’t know about you, but I don’t work outside the home but I definitely work!! I heard a story of an older woman who was talking to a young pregnant wife. She asked her “So are you going to stay home after the baby is born”. The young wife answerd “Absolutely not! That’s what daycares are for”.
We have become a world that lacks faithfulness and promotoes selfishness — especially in being a mother. We expect daycares to take care of our children. We expect the school system to teach our children. We expect Sunday Schools to teach our children about God. Yes, they may learn from these places, but this DOES NOT excuse us from the responsiblities that God has given to us as mothers! Maybe we think that today’s verse is only applicable to teachers, but I don’t think it says “teachers, train up your students…”
Our children are a blessing from God. Although today children are thought of as a curse, rather than a blessing. Children will test us. They will test every ounce of patience that we have. They will make us prove what we say to them by living it out in our own lives. But our children are a reward given to us by God.
How do you view your “role” as a mother? Are you being faithful to God with this important task? Are you down-playing the job that God has given to you? Do you feel that being a mother isn’t “enough”? Do you feel that being a mother is just throwing your life away? I pray that we will all ask ourselves these questions and go to God and His Word to see how He has CALLED us to be as MOTHERS!
