Acts 2:42-47

42 And they continued stedfastly in the apostles’ doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and in prayers.

43 And fear came upon every soul: and many wonders and signs were done by the apostles.

44 And all that believed were together, and had all things common;

45 And sold their possessions and goods, and parted them to all men, as every man had need.

46 And they, continuing daily with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, did eat their meat with gladness and singleness of heart,

47 Praising God, and having favour with all the people. And the Lord added to the church daily such as should be saved.

There are so many people who “claim” to be a Christian today and yet we know that they probably aren’t a child of God. I’m sure you know one (or more!) of them. But we have to remember that not only can we tell someone’s spiritual state by what they do that is against God, but we can tell their spiritual state by what they are doing FOR God.

I know that we’ve all heard the sermons on how so-called Christians are performing wicked acts (murder, adultery and fornication, theft, etc…) but how many times do we hear about those so-called Christians who are doing absolutely nothing FOR God? We don’t think twice about them. We just say “oh, they aren’t convicted” or “oh, they must be backslidden”. We automatically think that if they aren’t doing any “evil acts” then they really aren’t that bad. So what if they aren’t showing any fruit in their Christian life, as long as they aren’t doing “bad” things. That way of thinking is so wrong!!

There are many people who appear to be “good” but yet are just as sinful as the next person. A murderer in prison is considered to be evil, but yet a person who neglects to read their Bible, pray, or go to church is considered to be ok. Does the Bible say that???? An unsaved soul is an unsaved soul. You can’t sit back and decide which person is “better” when the fact remains that both of them are guilty and wicked in the eyes of God!

With all of that said let me ask you this… how is your spiritual state? How does it compare to today’s passage.

In verse 42 we find the “means of grace” in a Christian’s life:

1. They were saved (received His Word)
2. They were baptized. (were baptized)
3. They joined the church (there were added unto them…)
4. They were taught doctrine (continued steadfastly…)
5. They fellowshipped. (and fellowship)
6. They took part in the sacraments. (breaking of bread)
7. They prayed. (and in prayers)

These things weren’t just a “one-time” deal. Many times you see “Christians” who are converted and they seem so excited about their faith. But yet look at them a few months later and where is that excitement? In verse 46 we see how this CONTINUED in their lives. “They CONTINUED DAILY with ONE ACCORD in the temple, breaking bread from house to house, did eat their meat with glaness and singleness of heart, PRAISING God and having favour with all the people. And the Lord added to the church daily such as should be saved.”

The excitement of learning God’s Word, praying, going to church, fellowshipping, etc… shouldn’t end in a Christian’s life. You don’t have a “spiritual high” and then a while later all of a sudden have no desire. A Christian should always be eager to learn, study, and seek God’s Word daily.

We can’t add to this passage. We can’t add things to it and say that they are more important or more meaningful to our spiritual walk. We can’t put other things above what is stated in this passage.

In the light of Acts 2:42 how is your spiritual state?
