This song is one of the most “popular” hymns. Even non-Christians seem to know the words to it. But do they know what it means? Do we truly recognize and reflect on what it means?
I pray that after reading these words and verses that the next time we sing this hymn that it won’t just be a song of our mouths, but the “tune” of our hearts.
AMAZING GRACE
Words by John Newton, 1779
Amazing grace how sweet the sound (Ephesians 1:6) that saved (Ephesians 2:8) a wretch like me (Genesis 6:5-7). I once was lost but now am found (Matthew 18), was blind but now I see. (John 9).
Twas grace that taught my heart to fear, and grace my fears relieved; How precious did that grace appear, The hour I first believed. (Ephesians 1:5-9)
Thro many dangers, toils and snares, I have already come; Tis grace has brought me safe thus far, and grace will lead me home. (John 6:44-45)
And when this flesh and heart shall fail, And mortal life shall cease, I shall possess within the veil, a life of joy and peace. (Philippians 1:20-21)
When we’ve been there ten thousand years, bright shining as the sun. We’ve no less days to sing God’s praise than when we first begun. (Psalm 148)
