The following statements in bold are written by Don Fortner.
Here are the four facts revealed in Holy Scripture which I most cherish. Those four, blessed, gospel truths are the pillars of our faith, the joy of our hearts, the comfort of our souls, and the constant themes of our songs in worship and of the message we preach.
1. The God we worship and serve, our Heavenly Father
is absolutely sovereign in all things – (Dan. 4:34-37).
Do you believe God to be sovereign in all things? Whether we believe this or not, doesn’t change the fact that He is indeed Sovereign. Often we think that if we don’t believe it then it means it’s not true. But who God is doesn’t change based on our beliefs. We are to change our beliefs based on who God is!
2. The Lord Jesus Christ, God’s dear Son, our Savior has effectually redeemed his people from all sin – (Gal. 3:13).
God sent His Son to die for His children, in spite of the fact that we are depraved sinners. He died not to make us happy or to “feel good”, but He died for our sins! He died to spare us from what we deserve — God’s wrath!
3. Salvation is by grace alone through faith in Christ – (Eph. 2:8-9).
Are you saved? If so, how were you saved? Our answer shouldn’t be anything other than “by the grace of God”. If your answer was based on something you have done, then you need to ask yourself “am I depraved?” To say that we can save ourselves is saying that we can obtain righteousness on our own. And when we say that, we “downplay” the preciousness of God’s grace and make man higher than we ought to.
4. And the Lord our God sovereignly rules, controls, and disposes of all things in providence according to His own wise and holy will – (Isa.46:9-13; Rom. 8:28; 11:36; II Cor. 5:18).
Nothing happens by chance. We can’t say something happened by “accident” or “coincidence”. To say that things can just “happen”, is saying that God is not in control. If something can just “happen”, that means that something can happen out of God’s Will. And that wouldn’t make Him sovereign. And that goes against His Word. God is sovereign and His providence holds true no matter what we may try to do to “prevent” it or “change” it.
These four biblical statements give us hope, assurance, and salvation. They are not to be “feared” but to be embraced and to rejoice in them! God is God and He is the same yesterday, today, and forever! Amen!
