Today is my daughter’s 13th birthday. And for her birthday breakfast she chose waffles with strawberries and whipped cream. Well, I was out of Bisquick, so the waffles were homemade. I didn’t have any frozen strawberries, so I found a recipe and made strawberry sauce using fresh strawberries. And I didn’t have any cool-whip, so I made real whipped cream. Not exactly what I felt like doing this morning, but I wanted to do it for her.
This made me think about how “pre-packaged or prepared” our spiritual lives can become.
Say the same prayers (whether it’s one we’ve learned to recite, or one we tend to always say on our own).
We read a quick “prepared” devotional in the morning (Daily Bread for example).
We don’t even take our own notes at church, but follow the bulletin or pre-made notes.
So many things are “pre-packaged” or “prepared” for us. The work has been done for us. But if we continue to live a “pre-packaged” life, we will miss the good stuff!
I have to admit, the waffles did taste better than using Bisquick or eating frozen waffles. The sauce was better than using frozen strawberries. The whipped cream was better than a tub of cool-whip. More work, but more enjoyable! And my daughter was worth it!
Is God worth it to you? Is He worth the extra work? Are you willing to go beyond the “pre-packaged” devotionals, prayers, church services, etc….? Are you willing to work a little harder to have a more “worth-while” relationship with God?
Sometimes pre-packaged things are better than nothing. Any mother knows how convenient pre-packaged foods are! But if we served our children pre-packaged foods all day long, would they be healthy? Would they grow like they should?
The Daily Bread and quick devos are good to read. The “routine” prayers are sometimes all we can do. But let’s make sure that we don’t leave it at that! Let’s make sure that we are feeding on homemade spiritual foods too!
Are you living a pre-packaged spiritual life? Faith’s breakfast choice.
