For the past few days my Mom has told me about this beeping coming from her carbon monoxide detector. Well, she took the batteries out of it a few days ago but yet it kept beeping. So last night, around midnight, she couldn’t take it anymore. She began thinking of ways to get rid of this detector. Drive somewhere and throw it out the window? Run it over with the car? Drown it in the bath tub? Something’s gotta stop this beeping!

Well, she picks it up and puts it to her ear… waiting for the beep. “Beep”. There it was… that annoying beep. Although it wasn’t coming from the carbon monoxide detector at all! Something else was beeping in the kitchen. After what seemed like an endless search for the mystery beep, she finds the culprit. Buried on top of her fridge, was an old smoke detector. When she moved a year ago, someone must have grabbed it from the old house and just placed it on top of the fridge. So she removes the battery and waits…… and…… no beep! Finally some peace and quiet!

This reminded me of how satan works in our lives. Often, he is like this annoying beep trying to get us frustrated, angry, overwhelmed, tired, etc…. And he knows when to start “beeping” the most – when we are trying to rest in the Lord.

My Mom didn’t seem to notice the beeping during the day when the TV was on, or when she was doing laundry, etc…. No, she noticed the beep when she was trying to be still in the quiet. When she was trying to rest.

Did you ever notice that Sunday mornings before church seem to be the most chaotic? That is because satan is working over-time, trying to prevent you from meeting with God’s people. He will bring up hurt feelings and bitterness to prevent us from stepping foot into the house of the Lord. He will try to make us cranky so we will snap at our families. He will do anything and everything to stop us!

And the same is true when it comes to our quiet time with the Lord. The phone rings. The doorbell rings. The alarm clock beeps. So many rings, dings, and beeps – all trying to prevent us from resting in the Lord!

Are you going to be like my Mom and do what you can to find the source of the beeping and stop it?

Be aware of those beeps in your life and then do something about them!
