“Anyone can count the seeds in an apple… but only God can count the apples in a seed.”
A popular phrase amongst Christians is “plant a seed”. Which usually means to go out and witness, preach the gospel, and share the love of Christ with someone. In the hopes that the “seed” will be planted, take root, and bear fruit. However, when I read this quote today it put a little twist on that “seed planting” way of thinking.
I think from time to time we may feel frustrated when we try to ‘count’ how many times we have planted a seed for Christ. Maybe you have only led one person to Christ (that you know of). Maybe you have never led someone to Christ personally. Maybe you don’t think you know “how” to plant a seed for Christ. And we may end up feeling like we simply aren’t doing enough. But I think this quote today brings us hope!!!
Since our minds are finite, we can’t see the impact that we have on this world. Whether it’s for Christ or not for Christ. So based on the past and the present, we tend to “rate” our witnessing and seed planting. S for Satisfactory. U for Unsatisfactory. Or I for Incomplete. But we aren’t God and we cannot see how He is using us!!
If you are fortunate enough to have been able to lead someone to Christ and see how they grow, learn, and mature in their faith, that is awesome!!!! But if you are one of the many who feels like a failure when it comes to leading others to Christ, remember this… only God knows how many apples come from the seeds you planted!!
You may spend a lot of time talking to someone at a restaurant – debating God’s Word, etc… and the person you are with may reject what you are saying. However, you don’t know the other people that may be listening – the waitress… the people sitting at the table nearby… or even the children that may be sitting at your table! Just because you are KNOWINGLY trying to plant a seed with the person you are talking to, you may be UNKNOWINGLY planting seeds to others nearby!!
I watch a show called Army Wives on Lifetime. And this past Sunday night one of the main characters (who used to be a radio show host) was having a hard time with getting new housing. After feeling frustrated with the person that she was talking to, another woman comes up to her and says “you are Pamela Moran from the radio”. This “stranger” goes on to explain how she heard a show where Pamela gave advice to someone about sticking it out with her husband, etc… and that this particular show changed this “stranger’s” life. Pamela was amazed and thankful for how she was able to help this woman, even though her advice was given to another woman she was talking to.
I know the above scenario is fictional, but it is very true in our own lives! We unknowingly plant seeds around us – whether for Christ or not!
So I encourage you today to be a Johnny Appleseed for Christ! Even if you don’t see the trees grow and the apples ripen, keep on planting seeds!
And remember this other saying… “The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree”. If you claim the name of Christ, and claim Him as Lord, then live like it!! You are a very present example of Christ to others. Let others see Christ in You!
Have a great day planting!!!
