Real authority is the power to serve. — Dick McMullen
Power. It seems our lives revolve around it. Power (electricity) in our homes. Power (authority) in our jobs. Power (strength) in our bodies. Power, Power, Power.
But what is the purpose of POWER? The above quote is so great to answer this question.
The abuse of power is a terrible thing.
-Husbands abuse their power when they abuse their wives.
-Fathers abuse their power when they abuse their children.
-Bosses abuse their power when they mistreat their employees.
-People abuse their power when they get involved in fights.
-People abuse the power in their homes when they waste electricity.
-Government officials abuse their power when they take advantage of the system.
And the list goes on and on.
Jesus was and is all powerful. However, when he came to earth, He gave up His power to humbly come as a baby and sacrificially die as a man. Jesus is the ultimate example of how power can be used for God’s glory!
Think about Jesus’ life. How did He use his power?
-heal the sick
-calm the waters
-cast out demons
-feed the hungry
-DIE ON A CROSS!
The above acts of Christ show the reason that Jesus came to this earth – to SERVE.
“For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many.” – Mark 10:45
Christ didn’t come to earth to abuse His power. He wasn’t “power-tripping” when he dealt with the sick, poor, and needy. Christ knew all things. He knew the needs of the people without asking. He could see into the hearts of men. And how did He use His power? He served!
-He had the power to heal the sick, and he served by healing the sick.
-He had the power over nature, and he served by calming the storm.
-He had the power to cast out demons, and he served by driving pigs off a cliff.
-He had the power to feed the hungry, and he served by multiplying fish and bread.
Jesus used his power to SERVE! How amazing and awesome is that!
Do you hold a position of power? Whether it’s being an authority over your children. Or a boss that oversees a group of employees. Maybe even as a pastor, elder, or deacon that oversees ministries in your church. Whatever your position, how are you using your power?
We must use our power to serve, NOT serve the power itself! We must not “power trip” and take advantage of our authority. We must not do things simply because we “can”. Don’t serve the power! Use your power to serve!
How will you serve today?
