…My boys still play with their Gameboys. However, they lost their charger for inside the house. We have the car charger though. So every day we go to the van they bring their gameboys with them and fight over who gets to charge them first.

…Today is our homeschool co-op. Which means I need to bring the laptop with me. Since I teach the children’s choir in the sanctuary at the church, it makes it hard to plug in the laptop. So before I go, I need to make sure to have it fully charged and ready to go.

…I always have my cell phone with me during the day. And during the night it is plugged in (being charged) on my nightstand. It gets plugged in right before I go to bed and unplugged first thing when I wake up.

So many things in our lives that are “portable”. We aren’t tied down with wires or cords. However, at one point or another they will need to be plugged in to their charger. They will need to be charged in order to work to their full capacity.

We can learn a few things from our “technological friends”.

1. Plugged in. We must be fully plugged in to Christ in order to charge our spiritual battery. We must daily read His Word, pray, and fellowship with other believers. Having our spiritual battery charged by Christ Himself, is the only way to be fully effective and work to the best of our ability.

2. Portable. The thing I love most about my “technological friends” is that they are portable. No wires or cords. When we study God’s Word (spiritually charging) we will be able to use His Word no matter where we are at. We will be able to quote Scripture (without having a Bible), answer a theological question (without looking it up), and defend God’s Word (with or without warning). After we are fully spiritually charged we are then spiritually portable!

There’s another side of this idea of being portable … If my laptop was constantly plugged in to the wall, would I ever be able to use it as it was designed to be used – as a PORTABLE computer? The same is true with our spiritual lives. If we are always reading the Bible, praying, and studying, but not going out and witnessing or applying what we have learned, then we are the same as my plugged in laptop – not being used as it was intended.

3. Battery Warning. Most things that are “portable” have a battery “sign”. You can see how much of the battery power is left. It may flash or warn you when the power is almost depleted. If we don’t listen to this warning, our device will shut off. We must listen to our own “battery warnings” in our spiritual lives. These warnings may include:

-Sinful behavior
-Lack of desire for things of God
-Argumentative
-Complaining and Grumbling
-Lying or Defending yourself
-Lack of Self Control and Will Power
-Not attending church or Bible studies
-Not reading the Bible
-Not praying

And the list goes on and on.

We may not be able to see these warnings ourselves. That is why we must do frequent “spiritual checkups” and see if any of these things are present (or not present) in our lives. God not only uses His Word to reveal these things, but he uses our pastors, Christian friends, Christian books, etc….

So how about you….

Are you being spiritually charged?
Are you willing to be “portable”?
Is your battery warning flashing?
Are you ignoring your battery warning?

The next time you find yourself plugging in your portable device, stop and say a prayer asking God to recharge you spiritually.

May we all be plugged in and portable for Christ!
